So you’re thinking of going to a bridal trunk show. Here’s everything you need to know!
For newly engaged brides, after the excitement of the proposal, telling family and friends your good news and maybe an engagement party, thoughts turn to wedding dress shopping which can sometimes be daunting. One of the very best times to visit a boutique in search of your perfect dress is during a bridal trunk show.
Firstly – what is a bridal trunk show?
A trunk show is when a bridal designer showcases a range of their latest designs for a limited time only at a selected boutique. The term “trunk show” originates from a time when designers would literally pack up their gowns, veils and accessories in a trunk and take them around to stores for viewings. These days we have couriers to transfer our precious gowns from store to store but you will often find the Peter Trends designers, Monique and Paulein, with full suitcases (at the excess baggage counter) ready to jump on a plane and visit our favourite stockists.
During a trunk show brides have the ability to view and try on new and exclusive wedding dresses from the latest collections, straight off the runway, before they officially hit retailers, some 6-8 months later. In addition, many designers will include several of their best-selling iconic wedding dresses. You know the ones – that you have had on your pinterest board since before the proposal!
As well as a great collection of wedding dresses, a bridal trunk show will often include veils, accessories and extras, such as overskirts, detachable trains and sleeves, allowing you to find your whole bridal look!
What are the benefits of a bridal trunk show?
Be first to see the gowns – for many designers trunk shows are the first time that the designs are being showcased, making it a fantastic time to view and try on the gowns before their general release.
See more dresses – a bridal trunk show will generally include 10-20 dresses, sometimes up to 30 so you are seeing a lot more than the bridal boutique generally has in store.
Meet the Designer – often the designer or a representative will attend the trunk show, which gives brides a chance to discuss styles and custom changes.
Save money – bridal trunk shows often offer exclusive prices and discounts available for that weekend only.
Have fun – there is always a special buzz in store on trunk show weekends (and if you are lucky a glass of bubbly and some nibbles) so you can have a really enjoyable time with your family and bridesmaids.
When are bridal trunk shows held?
Trunk show events take place throughout the year in different areas. The dates and collections available will be published on most designer websites and social media, giving you plenty of time to book in your appointment. Traditionally designers will release two collections a year and the gowns will tour for the six months following each collection launch.
Peter Trends Bridal holds trunk shows across Australia and the United States and currently we are showcasing the wedding dresses from the 2018 Emanuella Collection and selected Diva Curves styles. In the USA, the gowns hit the road straight after New York Bridal Fashion Week and cross the country from the West Coast to the East Coast. Similarly, in Australia we hold trunk shows after the Sydney and Melbourne trade events.
I love the sound of a bridal trunk show! What do I do now?
Booking an appointment for a bridal trunk show is essential. Trunk shows are always extremely busy and have a limited amount of bookings available. Be sure to call or email in advance so that you can ask any questions you may have, for example the price range of the gowns, and then book a time! For a bridal trunk show appointment, it is important to have everyone with you that you “need” to make a decision or available via facetime, and be prepared to take the leap that day. Trunk show appointments are highly coveted and are reserved for serious shoppers ready to say yes!
