Find your dream gown
So you’re engaged….. what next?
A splendid dress will transform you into a beautiful bride. Every bride wants to feel amazing but also comfortable on her wedding day. You want to be yourself but the best version of yourself.
Plan Before Shopping – Wedding dress shopping can be overwhelming at first, especially if you do not know what you want, so it pays to do your homework. Read up a bit on the lingo before you visit your first dress salon, so you know your sheath style from your princess ball gown and your sweetheart neckline from your illusion lace.
Look through magazines, websites and catalogues for designs that appeal to you. Find and follow your favourite designers on facebook, instagram and pinterest. Check to see if your favourite designers have a newsletter, that way you can keep up to date on the latest styles and events, as well as fabulous sales and special offers.
Create a pinterest board – Pinterest is full of millions of fabulous wedding dresses, ideas and styling advice, so get creative and starting saving your favourite gowns so you can access them easily when shopping. Take the time to decide what you want before you start to look around, you will have to choose between traditional and contemporary designs, fabrics, styles and colours, to find the one that suits you.
Book your boutique appointments – Once you have a shortlist of stores you would like to visit it is best to book an appointment early. Many bridal stores can be booked out weeks in advance and may have a 6-12 month lead time on gowns. Check the appointment requirements for each store to ensure you will receive the best service the store has to offer. Look for opening times, parking availability, number of guests allowed, are children allowed?
Get to know your consultant – She is there to help you in every possible way. Let her know your likes and dislikes, don’t keep your opinions a secret. Your consultant is trained to make suggestions, offer options available and find your dream gown, so relax and let her do her job!
Stick to your dress budget – Determine the maximum amount you can afford to spend on your dress before you shop. Wedding dresses can vary greatly in price, so if you tell your bridal consultant what your budget is like she will be able to bring you dresses that fit your needs. This will ensure that you do not fall in love with a wedding gown that exceeds your budget. Many stores will offer a payment program – don’t be afraid to ask if there is a purchase plan and how it works.
Check if there are trunk shows being held at the stores you will visit. This gives you an opportunity to see the latest styles and receive a welcome discount if you order on the day.
Style & Fit – A wedding dress should not only be suitable for the venue and weather, it should also flatter your figure and style. Breezy lightweight fabrics are ideal for outdoor weddings and warm weather, while long sleeves, velvet and layered wedding gowns work well in Winter.
Destination weddings are so popular now, giving you and your guests an amazing backdrop for your special day as well as a gorgeous getaway for you and your beloved and your closest friends and family. If you travel to an exotic destination it could be very warm and you will need a comfortable, light gown. Similarly, if you are having a gorgeous mountainous backdrop, you might consider long sleeves and fur wrap.
One of the latest trends is having a mocha underlay which looks great against most skin tones and really makes the gown lace pop! You don’t have to stick to tradition – find your dream dress that really speaks to you and shows off your personality.
While trying on bridal dresses, look for patterns that flatter your figure. Straplesss gowns are a traditional favourite that suit most women. If you are tall and slender, choose a wedding gown that fits you well and amplifies your curves to create the perfect silhouette. If you are short, avoid dresses with too many layers and heavy fabric as this can make you look shorter. For girls with full figures, tight fitting dresses, or those with corsets are ideal. If you have an hourglass figure, you may like to consider the mermaid silhouette, which is ideal for showing off your well proportioned curves.
Wedding Dress Fitting Tips – You can easily get confused with the various options available. So, take a trusted friend along when you visit bridal boutiques to help you with your decision. Attend your appointment with an open mind, and check the dresses recommended for you by the bridal consultant. Do not judge a dress by how it looks on the hanger. Some fabulous designs may not seem great till you try them on.
Allow time for the required fitting sessions before the wedding to make sure that your wedding dress is perfectly tailored to suit you. Ask your consultant the recommended alterations procedure – do they have an in store service or do they recommend a local service?
Accessories – Finally, select the right accessories to complement your wedding gown. Try them on while wearing the dress to make sure they match. There are many veil options to consider. Before you decide going without a veil, consider wearing one for the ceremony only, or a detachable veil. Many a bride has entered our boutique saying she does not want a veil only to burst into tears when trying one on and finding that it completes the look perfectly.
Once you find your dream gown you can relax and all the other planning for your wedding day will start falling into place. Every bride shines on her wedding day and your groom will love you no matter what you wear!
You can now look forward to your big day, as you are set to look fabulous on the occasion that will be etched in your memory forever.
